If you are looking for a swimming class in your local area, the best place to start is online.
Most aquatic centres and public pools list their swimming class timetables on web pages so that they are easy to find.
However, there is often a long waiting list, so it's worth putting your children's names down as soon as you can.
Most aquatic associations recommend that children can have their first swimming class at around 6 months of age. This early start encourages water confidence which can quickly lead to good swimming techniques.
However, having your first swimming class at age 2 or 3 won't jeopardize potential swimming ability.
What to look for in your swimming class:
- Make sure the swim teachers are appropriately qualified. There are specific qualifications for teaching under 3s, so check this with your swim school.
- Check that the pool is warm and clean. When children get cold they lose concentration and can start to disrupt the class.
- Talk to the pool manager about which swimming class your child should go into. Although most classes are arranged according to ability, you should also check that they program will be age appropriate
Most children love their swimming class. Lessons should be fun, creative, energetic and well organised. If you feel that your child isn't progressing, just talk to the teacher or supervisor about your concerns. It may be that a simple switch to a different class or teacher could make all the difference.
