Regular swim classes are the best way for both adults and children to learn to swim. But to make sure you really get the most out of your swim classes, it's essential to check some key things before you start:
- Are the teachers of all the swim classes properly qualified?
Good swim teachers make all the difference to how quickly you learn to swim. Before you start the swim classes, check that the teachers have the appropriate teaching qualification and have current CPR certification. Also make some time to watch the teachers in action. Teaching styles vary, so work out which style of teaching would work best for you or your child.
- Will your child (or you) be put into the right class according to age/ability?
This is a delicate but important balance. Cognitive and physical development is age-dependent, but there's no point putting a 7 year old with no swimming experience into a group of the same age who have been swimming for the last 3 years. Liaise with the teachers to work out where your child will learn best.
- Are the swim classes at a time that suits you (so you will be able to attend the whole course)?
Swim classes are run as courses. It's very important that lessons are taken regularly and in the right order so that children learn the right progressions through the strokes. Children who miss lessons can be very disruptive to the rest of the class and demand more attention from the teacher to catch up. Equally, the child who misses lessons may lose interest and enthusiasm if they feel they are trailing behind the rest of the group.
- Is the pool clean/warm enough?
This is a critical point for the enjoyment of the swim classes. Young children need warmer water if you expect them to stay comfortable throughout the s.ession. They don't move around as much as the older children, so get cold quickly. Baby classes should always be held in specially heated pools.
If you run through these points before heading off to your swim classes I'm sure you and your children will have a lot of fun and be swimming in no time!
