The main aim of pilates is to "create a fusion of mind and body so that without engaging the mind the body will move with economy, grace and balance".
There are 6 main principles of pilates:
- Breathing: You must breathe throughout your exercises. You should concentrate on taking deep full breaths. Breathing is an essential part of pilates and must be coordinated with the physical movements performed.
- Centering: All your energy should come from the center of the body (also known as the core).
- Concentration: As a beginner you will concentrate on delicate, fundamental movements along with breathing. Every part of your body that is involved in a movement should be precisely controlled.
- Control: There should be precise muscle control, no loss of balance or uncontrolled movement.
- Precision: There is purpose to all movements executed in pilates. None should be left out.
- Efficiency and Flow: Once a particular movement has been perfected it should be able to flow seamlessly and efficiently into another.
In addition, pilates has been shown to increase flexibility amongst it's practitioners. It's a low impact great all-round exercise program that's good for both the body and the mind.
