Music and singing are vital forms of expression from a very early age. Babies jiggle to the sound of the Wiggles from being very young, and continue to love jolly songs, nursery rhymes and tunes right through childhood.
My two-year old loves music and singing. Hi5 is his favourite band, whith the Wiggles coming in a close second. Within minutes of watching the videos he's joining in at full volume. Our 3-month old baby is also starting to get into the swing of things. There's definitely a bit of a giggle when she hears familiar tunes.
Although as we get older our tastes may start to mellow, we all love to have a good old singalong when the opportunity arises. How else could we account for the phenomenal success of kareoke bars? Whether it's Great Aunt Maud or little cousin Jimmy, everyone loves an atmosphere of hearty music and singing.
As Christmas gets closer I am reminded even more that music and singing is at the heart of our culture. Christmas Carols are played in every shop, carol singers prepare for their Christmas Eve rounds and children belt out their Christmas songs that their end of term concerts.
Music, singing and dancing are expressions of joy and freedom. As we city dwellers become incrasingly isolated from our neighbours it's good to see the unity that's generated by song. Strangers open their doors to carol singers, streets bustle with smiling last-minute shoppers and Bing Crosby's 'I'm Dreaming of a White Christmas' reminds us all of the goodwill of Christmas time.
