Maths lessons don't have to be restricted to the classroom. If your child has a healthy interest in maths you can work in some fun maths lessons whether you are in the car, going for a walk or even watching TV!
Depending on the age of your child you can make up fun maths lessons for them in a variety of ways. For example, counting the number of steps to the park, working out the number of days to christmas or calculating the probability that the next card from the deck will be a picture card. Counting skills are especially important for small children. Teaching them to quickly recognise groups of objects - encouraging them to identify groups of 3, 4 or 5 objects without having to count them individually is a fun exercise. To make it more fun for your child you should reward them with sweets (or fruit!) if they get things right.
Teaching older children counting tricks can also be fun. For example when trying to do multiplication in your head, say for the sum 36*15, you can tell them that it's 36*10 + half of that again (360+180) which is much easier to work out. Thinking in this way can really give your child a headstart in their maths lessons.
Opportunities to work in fun maths problems are only limited by your imagination.
