Bikram Yoga, Top 10 Tips

1. Get to your class early (at least 15 minutes before it starts). You may have to sign disclaimers and you will want to acclimatise to the heat.

2. Dress for the occasion. Wear yoga shorts if possible and a yoga tank top. You are going to get hot, so try to wear as little as possible.

3. Take and drink water. Drink it in-between postures. Don't glug it down just sip it.

4. Don't push yourself too hard. The combination of exertion and heat can make people lose consciousness. If you feel faint, sit down on your knees for a few minutes and drink some water.

5. Try to concentrate on the postures instead of talking with your friends. People are there to do yoga and to meditate, they don't want to hear you chatting away with your mates!

6. Stay in the class. The first time you try bikram yoga you will want to leave before the end of the class. It will take you a while to get used to the heat, but persevere with it - it's worth it!

7. Bikram yoga is hard, don't pretend it isn't. Even if you've been doing yoga for ages, bikram yoga will be a shock to you. Bikram yoga rooms are very hot and the times you hold the postures for will be longer than you are used to.

8. Don't eat before the class starts. We recommend avoiding food for at least three hours before the class starts. Eating before the class starts will result in you feeling sick.

9. Give yourself a break afterwards. Allow at least 2 minutes after the class ends to let your body recover.

10. Book at least 10 sessions and stick to them. The first time you try bikram yoga you may find it too hot and too hard and it will put you off doing it again. Committing financially to 10 sessions will encourage you to go back. Once you are used to Bikram yoga you won't look back.
